CyberRwanda: Branding sneak peak

This innovative project uses technology and storytelling to equip and empower adolescents 12-19 years old with knowledge and self-efficacy to prevent unplanned pregnancy and HIV. After four years of research and co-designing with over 800 young people, teachers, and government stakeholders in Rwanda, we are thrilled to be working closely with the Society for Family Planning (SFH) Rwanda to launch the project in 60 schools across eight districts in September 2020.

Young people in Rwanda said that they needed a program that can make a meaningful and measurable impact on their lives. Reducing adolescent pregnancy and decreasing rates of HIV is both a national priority and something that young people reported was important to them. But for a new product to be successful, whether it’s an app, an after-school program, or a new fashion style, it’s got to be desirable to the user. It’s not enough to be needed - it must also be cherished!

How do we do this? First things first - make it beautiful!

One way we are working to make CyberRwanda desirable to young people is to create a strong logo and visual design. Our team has been hard at work creating a new brand identity for CyberRwanda, and we’re excited to give you a sneak peek into their work!

“We worked with young people to make sure that every aspect of CyberRwanda resonates with their community values,” said Senior Product Designer Caroline Wong. “The branding of the digital product and accompanying promotional materials is simple, honest, and bold.”

The logo for CyberRwanda was created to represent a sense of collective community. “We worked closely with young people in Kigali to develop a mark that was based on traditional Rwandan art, strong yet simple patterns, and the many rolling hills that surround the capital city and earn it its motto, Milles Collines; the land of a thousand hills,” said Communications Designer Snigdha Pamula. “Our brand values are being compassionate, trustworthy, future forward, and inclusive.”
